General Motors officially flipped the switch on June 9, 2026: the Chevrolet Equinox EV, GMC Sierra EV, and Cadillac Lyriq now support vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional charging. That means a compatible GM electric vehicle can send power back to your house during an outage — turning your EV into a rolling backup battery system. Combined with a home solar array, it’s a resilience setup that would have cost tens of thousands of dollars in dedicated battery hardware just a few years ago.
GM joins Ford (F-150 Lightning), Kia (EV6, EV9), Hyundai (Ioniq 5 and 6), and Tesla (Cybertruck, via Powershare) in offering bidirectional capability. The residential charger ecosystem is catching up: the first residential V2H system was formally interconnected in San Diego County in May 2026, and utility interconnection approvals are becoming more streamlined in California, Texas, and the Pacific Northwest.
For solar homeowners, the calculus is straightforward. A typical EV battery holds 75–131 kWh of usable energy — enough to run an average American home for 2–4 days. Pair that with daytime solar generation and you have a system that can sustain essential loads indefinitely without a separate battery bank. The key hardware requirement is a compatible bidirectional EV charger (EVSE), which typically runs $1,500–$3,000 installed.
If you’re in the market for a new EV this summer, bidirectional charging should be on your shortlist criteria. And if you already own a compatible vehicle, check with your installer or utility about interconnection requirements — the infrastructure is finally there to make it work.
